Rabbi Gary approached me and another member of our congregation inquiring if we would have interest in training to be a Mohel. I already knew how to perform medical circumcision and he was presenting me with an opportunity to serve the Jewish community here in New Hampshire. I jumped at the opportunity.
Studying the Halacha and customs of Milah with Rabbi Gary gave me a profoundly deeper understanding and appreciation of bris Milah. It is a direct connection to our biblical past, the original mitzvah that predates the Torah itself.
Rabbi Gary has a very organized curriculum that helps give you an extensive background knowledge of bris Milah drawing on material ranging from the Talmud to more contemporary commentaries. We did our training over the course of 3 several hour sessions, but the rabbi is very flexible with how you would want to train with him making it easier to integrate the studies into your busy schedule.
The rabbi leads great discussions and is very approachable with a good sense of humor. This makes for lively conversations and questions about the ritual. This is a very enjoyable and enlightening course that helped me directly reconnect with my Jewish ancestors in a powerful way. If you already know how to perform medical circumcisions you should consider becoming a Mohel. If you live in a small Jewish community there may be a great need for a local Mohel (there may not even be one). It is a spiritually enriching endeavor that will change your life.
